Little Known Facts

Inspiration from Real-Life Events

“Authors are told to write what you know, but thankfully you don’t have to be a serial killer to write about one. In A Kind of Hush, Griff’s character was based on an actual event from my husband’s childhood. He was six or seven playing outside with a friend when he sucked a jawbreaker down his windpipe and was turning blue. A neighbor who happened to be taking a day of vacation was out mowing his yard when he sprinted over and dislodged it, saving his life.”

Characters Rooted in Reality

“Life in a Box is semi-biographical, none truer than protagonist Andee Camp who mirrors my own dreams and insecurities as the character is challenged to write a novel based on her family. Andee had lived in a protective shell created by her parents, shielded from failure, but when she remembered who she was before the world told her who she should be, she found her own voice…one filled with passion and confidence as she created a character driven novel based on her colorful relatives.”

Setting the Scene

“My goal is for readers to feel as though they are part of the journey through the history and geographically diverse landscapes of my character’s travels. A Kind of Hush alternates between Buffalo, New York and the Big Bend area of Texas. Life in a Box jumps from Portland, Oregon to Amarillo, Texas to Southern California and Dust in the Wind travels from Paris, France to Heidelberg, Germany, to a fictional town in the Texas Hill Country. Each setting offers a tour of the sites and sounds attached to each location.”

A Tribute to Loved Ones

“I leave a piece of myself in everything I write and many of my fictional characters are near and dear to my heart as I’ve indicated in Life in a Box. In a scene in my work-in-progress, Dust in the Wind, a young tour guide in a castle in Heidelberg, Germany, tells a story of Captain Richard Bowen, bombardier, and squadron leader – Uncle Dick to her – who guided the leading Flying Fortress of the first American Air Force to stage a daylight raid on Berlin, releasing the first bomb over the German capital. Captain Bowen was my father’s younger brother, and I wanted to pay tribute to his service and sacrifice during World War II.”
